Optical Drive

16x/6x DL DVD±RW - $50

No excuses – A DVD burner is a must. Since DVD-RW drives have become so rock-bottom cheap, CD-RWs have literally become a “throw-away” technology. Much like CD burners have been in the past, DVD burners have become identical units, offering the same speeds and features overall. While we all play brand favorites, recommending a model of DVD or CD burner is difficult because, well, they are pretty much identical. But, here’s some tips to make your DVD burner selection easier.

What to look for:

  • Dual-layer capability

  • 6x+ re-write capability

  • 16x record / playback

  • A form of “buffer-under-run” technology

Input Devices

Logitech MX700 Cordless combo - $65

In an ongoing struggle to keep the mess minimized, more and more components are going wireless. The absence of a tail on the mouse also means more control, since you don’t have that annoying little thing snagging the edge of the desk. So in the search for a great wireless optical combo, the Logitech MX700 combo won’t disappoint. It features a sharp look and plenty of buttons for both the mouse and keyboard. The RF signal has an excellent range and the mouse is very responsive - perfect for gaming and sensitive applications. The package also includes a rechargeable base for the mouse, which is very nice and surprisingly thoughtful.

Case & PSU

Thermaltake VB1000SWS - $80 or
Enermax EG465P (430w PSU)
- $45

Like with some other computer components, there are almost infinite choices. The case you choose will very much reflect your personality and style but functionality and installation should be very strong considerations.   So what we have here is a very stylish, mirror-finished silver chassis which is all steel, except for the front which is plastic. Very sharp. Cooling is more than adequate with 2x120mm fans included with the chassis, but if you really want to turn up the AC there’s space for more fans as well. The inside is roomy, well finished and features what is mostly no-tools-necessary construction. Another neat feature is the front I/O panel is actually located on top, which makes a lot of sense for many people since they keep their system on the floor. So not only is this case an eye-popper, it’s quite functional.

The power supply (Enermax 431w) is a great investment for your whole system. Its top-notch quality delivers clean, consistent power to your components and I’ve found Enermax PSUs in general to be highly reliable. I am actually using this PSU in my current setup and couldn’t be happier with it and at $45, it’s a great deal.
