Katrina Cuts
Posted by Thomas. Filed under: blog
As you’re probably well aware Katrina has come & devastated New Orleans. Whatever about the responses of the Army & other aid agencies, there’s 1 thing which I’ve not really seen on TV news networks; the government was warned of events like this & the need to repair levees & budgets were still cut. This is something I find really infuriating, despite numerous experts opinions over the years they’ve consistently been ignored when it comes to obtain funding. I’ve mentioned this on the forum but I feel it’s something which more people need to be aware of. There’s a lot of people dead, in part due to government negligence.
Last year an emergency exercise run by the federal, Louisiana & New Orleans governments, featuring a fictional Hurricane Pam, almost exactly foretold the disaster now unfolding. But officials said plans to prepare for an actual catastrophe were abandoned because of cuts. 3 years ago, another study concluded that a hurricane less intense than the 1 that has now hit New Orleans would flood most of the city; in 1998 a less severe 1 still, Georges, produced a 17ft wall of water.
In the print/online media there’s a growing number of articles covering this however, e.g. Independent Online’s detailed coverage as does Reuters, further links being available via Google News. Update - I’ve read a few characters (Bush & Homeland Security’s head I believe) have stated along the lines of no-one could have forseen this happening. Makes you feel sick don’t it?
