Lots of sites, Directron, NewEgg, Frys, for example, have been selling it for $64 to $77 without a rebate.

They are voiding stock because new and better models are on the way.

What drives did they have all the trouble with, the 7200.11 Barracudas?

    Wasn't it the 2.5 inch 5400Rpm Seagate's with spin-up speed indexing problems?

Look at all the vendor websites... TigerDirect, NewEgg, CDW,, Directron, Frys, PCMall, TechDepot, and so on... They are all overstocked, and their now excessive inventory will be more excessive when the new deliveries now on order arrive... Newer, better, cheaper.
There was way too much negative publicity from the failures of 1 TB, 1.5 TB, and 2 TB drives... they didn't sell as a result. Now there are newer, better, cheaper ones on order for the presumed August and Septermber demand for college and high school... and the presumption that the economy will continue to improve... but their old inventory will not go any where.
All these vendors will be competing with each other to sell the new inventory. The smart ones are going to reduce their more costly and less reliable old inventory.
They are all competing with each other to appeal to this market when so few have the money to make a major purchase.
