Steven Walton, Where are you? This Is really for you but I'll take all input. Last year, Steve wrote us a nice post on Building a 32-Thread Xeon Monster PC for Less Than the Price of a Flagship Core i7.

My question is simple, is the info in this post still accurate or has some other crazy CPU gone cheap that would beat the performance of the build Steve wrote about over a year ago?

And now for the why...
I crunch serious numbers. Complex electronic simulations software.
I have $1K to spend on a desktop "Cray".
Is this still the best I can afford?
