Hey,

thank you for your time and sharing of your expertise. My grandfather managed to pay for a fake antivirus software(4-6months ago, he cant remember) He has had me remove two; personal internet security 2011, one other closely related one that rkill and MBAM took care of. however, his computer has been on the downfall ever since.

using internet explorer, google was redirecting to some random Chinese website, nothing looking like Google. now it gets a website cannot load error.

firefox's error reads: bad request (invalid hostname)

Spybot cannot remove the following items:

Microsoft.Windows.Redirectedhosts 3 entries (securityC) fraud.windowsprotectionsuite 15 entries (malware)

and displays this error message when i try to remove them:
unexpected error in fining problems (cannot create file "C:\windows\system32\drivers\ect\hosts". Access is denied)

==== End Of File ===========================

Welcome to TechSpot!
I see you set a restore point and deleted the Host files>> RP145: 6/6/2011 9:01:42 PM - before deleting host file.
We will need to work further on that. It is curious though that Malwarebytes was clean. Is there are router being used? If so, the following needs to be done: It will be helpful to you if you print the directions below:

You will need to do a DNS Flush, then reset your router.
Start> Run> type cmd> enter> at the C prompt type ipconfig /flushdns (note space before the /)

Exit the Command prompt when finished and shut the system down.-

  • [1]. Shut down your computer, and any other computer connected to your router.
    [2]. On the back of the router, there should be a small hole or button labelled RESET. Using a bent paper clip or similar item, hold that in continuously for twenty seconds.
    [3]. Unplug the router. Wait sixty seconds.
    [4].Now holding again the reset button, plug it back in. Continue holding the reset button for twenty seconds. Unplug the router again.
    [5].With the router unplugged, start your computer.
    [6].Connect to the router again. The turn the router back on.
    [7].When it stabilizes, reboot your workstation and try to access the internet. If you have any issues, access the Router configuration page and re-enter your authentication information.
    [8]. Reboot the system and test the internet. You may have to reconfigure the router settings based on your setup.
=========================================
I'll have you replace those host files in a bit. Please run the following after you have handled the flush and reset:
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
============================================
Then run Combofix: Please note: If you have Combofix on the desktop already, please uninstall it. Then download the current version and do the scan: Uninstall directions, if needed
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
--------------------------------------
Download Combofix from HERE or HEREhttp://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save to the desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
    & follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.

Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
Note 3: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
Note 4: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
====================================
Please do not use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you, unless I direct you to. Do not use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
=====================================
I strongly recommend that you uninstall HitmanPro It is a bundle of free programs found on the internet- some without the author's permission. But unlike those programs which do it all for free, Hitman Pro will only remove entries free during the trial period- after that, you have to pay for the program(s) to get bad entries found, removed.

Edit: It appears that you have tried to install Avast for the AV. But there are errors indicating that it might not have been activated. Please check into that.

Hey, sorry for the delay

I unisntalled HitmanPro.
the router and internet connection the infected computer had been used on is at my grandfathers house, i have taken the computer to my house since.I did the dns flush using the infected computer, on my home network. will i need to do it at my grandpas house as well?

i ran combofix the first time, with malwarebytes and superantispyware running, and then i ran it a second time with all anti spyware/malware/virus. i included both logs. thank you for your time, i will be more prompt at answering next time.

Hijack this displayed the following message while running. i just clicked okay and it continued:
"for some reason your system denied write acess to the host file. if any hijacked domaisn are in this filoe, hijackthis may not be able to fix this. if it happens, edit the file yourself."

There are several antimalware programs on the system, but I do not see an antivirus program. Please put either one of the following free and good AV programs on the system:
Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
Avast-Free Antivirus
Please reboot the computer when finished.
==============================================
Please run the following scans in the order that I have them: All must be done on the problem computer:

1. Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only.' Check each of the following, if present:

Beginning with this line:Check all of the 01-Hosts entries>>>>>>
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 4-open-davinci.com>>>>>>>
Check All of the 01-Hosts entries>>>>>>through the last one>>
O1 - Hosts: 204.152.194.148 au.search.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HitmanPro35] "C:\Program Files\Hitman Pro 3.5\HitmanPro35.exe" /scan:boot

Close all Windows except HijackThis. Click on "Fix Checked."
=======================================================
Reboot the computer.
======================================================
2. Click this link to Replace the Host Files
====================================================
3. Please run this Custom CFScript

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
    [2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    [3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:
Code:
KillAll::
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\hitmanpro35.sys
Folder::
c:\program files\Hitman Pro 3.5
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Hitman Pro
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . Please paste into to your next reply.
====================
4. Right click on the Taskbar> Explore> M comouter> Double click on the Local Drive(C)> Programs> scroll to HitmanPro folder> Do a right click> Delete. Exit Windows Explorer. =============================================
5. Update and rescan with Malwarebytes: Note: On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform Full Scan]option is selected and then click on the Scan button.

When scan has finished, you will see this image:
scan-finished.jpg

  • Click on OK to close box and continue.
  • Click on the Show Results button.
  • Click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware.
  • At end of malware removal, the scan log opens and displays in Notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Pad before copying the log to paste in your next reply.
=========================================
6.
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESETOnlineScan
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    [o] Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    [o] Double click on the
    esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
    on your desktop.
  • Check 'Yes I accept terms of use.'
  • Click Start button
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    esetonlinescannersettings_thumb.jpg
  • Uncheck 'Remove found threats'
  • Check 'Scan archives/
  • Leave remaining settings as is.
  • Press the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please wait for the scan to finish.
  • When the scan completes, press List of found threats
  • Push Export of text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Paste this log in your next reply.
  • Push the Back button
  • Push Finish

NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
=================================================
The scans should be run by themselves. That is, no other scan should be running. When you run the CFFix and the Eset online virus scan, the security programs should be disabled during the scan.
==================================================
Please leave all logs- only one for each scan- in your next reply.

hey

hey,

***im trying my best to do the scans at home on the infected computer and the limited access i have to a relatives laptop (while checking for updates at work, where i dont have acecss to the infeced computer) .. i appreciate your time to helping me and others ***

so i did the hijack scan, no files with 01 or 04 showed up. i rebooted anyways.

i replaced the host files on the infected computer.

i was connected to the internet the entire time

then i draggd and dropped the text file, combo fix made the text document, then updated and ran another scan. the infected computer ran the blue screen scan prompting for 10 minutes for 3 hours, i treid to shut down the machine but it wouldnt let me.

i will re run it again tomorrow night, i will have a few hours to spare. for some reason the log file combofix originaly posted on the c drive is now gone. thank you i will update you tomorrow

No problem. Post the logs when you can> the log generated after the script in Combofix and the Eset scan log.

malware bytes, combfox, eset online scan

hey so i tried to rub the script through combofix 3 times.

blue screen came up, it would say the file could not be found, it would create a restore point, blue screen rest and started scanning, but would not stop (left it for several hours) it made a file called combotext identified as a "folder" not file folder, but with a computer as a logo. when opened, it would open up c:/combofix, but windows explorer would display the contents of "my computer" instead, like a loophole.

i renamed it combofix.txt but that didnt work. i could a folder called coobox under the c drive, cintaing a few text documents that look like they could be log files. everyime however, the scan would not complete, i would shut down the computer by holding down the pwer buttin(i know im sorry lol but start->shutdown didnt do anything, tried a few other ways).
****note: i just opened the text files i thought were log files and its just a copy of the script used.. so i didnt include them*****

OTM by OldTimer - Version 3.1.18.0 log created on 06202011_223028

Files moved on Reboot...
File move failed. C:\WINDOWS\temp\_avast_\Webshlock.txt scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

No logs could be produced. Note, i have already manually deleted the hitman folder from program files..

The system works good now. I have done minimal browsing online, but everything seems fine so far.

To prevent this from happening again:

This computer belongs to my grandfather who is very vulnerable on the internet. What program should I install that will keep him the safest. I has to be VERY simple to update/scan. Ive been recommended the new norton (one button to update/fix everything)

Quick Question (may or may not be related)

My grandfather recieves jokes in the form of .ppt and .wav files from his relatives overseeas in Holland, via email. However, when the file is recieved here (in Canada), an underscore (_) has been insterted into the extension, making it un-readable. "joke1.wav" becomes "joke1._wav", "joke2.ppt" becomes "joke2._ppt" ect..

His computer abilities and eyesight make it too difficult for him to remove the underscore from the extnsion manually. He saves them up for when I come over, and i rename all of the files, removing the underscore. Once the underscore is removed, the file works. Any ideas of how to fix this?

Your 'quick question' may not have a quick answer. I am not a programmer. You could go into Folder Options and add new files types to reflect the underscore> such as add _wav and have it open with the same app as .wav.

But I do not advise this. He is not a safe surfer and anything that you add or change may expose the system further. There is also the possibility that the files being sent may have an improper space or character that is causing the underscore. Or if the Dutch language is involved, the system may not be set to interpret it correctly.
========================================
I am not comfortable with the inability to run the script in Combofix. It is not the contents itself that is of concern, but the inability to run the script and generate a new log. If you still have Combofix on the system and you are getting a BSOD when you attempt to run the script, then there is still some problem.
=======================================
I'd like you to update and run HijackThis once more. If there re any bad entries remaining, We can stop them using HJT.

Hey,
Thanks for the answer, I will have to look into the "underscore" issue later..

Bad News. I sent the computer back to him monday. The internet seemed fine and I kept avast, malwarbytes, the "SUPERspyware" program, and spybot S&D monitoring.

He said yesterday (wed) that internet is not working. This may be a simple issue (infact, I JUST remembered, the router is unplugged...) lol... wow.... (my mom dropped off his computer, shes not very good either)

this was probably a good thing he has no internet... I will run HJT at his house tomorrow (Friday AM) and post the log.

Would you suggest purchasing any of the safety program’s Full-Versions?

No, purchasing the programs isn't going to make any difference over free ones. Unless you can manage to educate your grandfather in thing he should not do, it won't matter. You can pass on any of the following if you'd like. They are all free and good. Perhaps it might give a slight security edge:

Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
    [o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editior in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
    [o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
    [o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
    [o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
    [o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
    [o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
    [o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
    [o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
    [o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
    [o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
    [o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
    [o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
    I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
    [o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
    [o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
    [o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
    [o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
