9800SE problems - artifacts

Hi everyone, I've got a problem here...

I recently got given my friend's old Radeon 9800SE card, which he said was cutting out after a few minutes of use. I thought this was overheating, so I removed the GPU heatsink and replaced the rock-hard thermal stuff with fresh goop.

It now runs without cutting out, but when I try to run anything 3D or play a video clip, there's lots of horizontal lines or regularly spaced green dots on the screen. Any idea why this is happening? Was something damaged by the heat?

Also, if I use the Catalyst 6.11 driver, it acts very slow, but if I let Windows install its driver by itself (Xp installs version 6.14, which is not available on the ATI site) it works fine. If Direct3D and DirectDraw hardware acceleration is turned off, the lines disappear. Does this mean it might be a driver problem?

Thanks!

Specs -
Mobo: MSI K7N2 Delta
CPU: Duron 1800
HD: 20gb, 40gb and 120gb Seagate Barrcudas
RAM: 512mb Kingston
PSU: 300w SeaSonic
Also has a Hauppage WinTV card and a Samsung DVD-RW drive.

I've heard that it could be a BIO issue - would re-flashing the card's BIOS help?

Thanks
