A Dead Hard Drive. Won't Format. Errors!?

  1. Hi,

Like a lot of people I have tried to re-install xp. I wanted to clean the entire HD, so intially did this via a windows millenium boot up disk (my cd disk was not auto loading for some reason). Anyhow I resolve the auto loading problem and attempt to create the relevant partitions using windows xp start up, this it does, but on attempting to format the newly created partitions the machine tells me the hd has errors or problems etc. Has this HD bitten the dust or are there ways of trying to resolve. Currently there is not operating system on the hd so any help would need to be around the limited things I can do. The hd was working fine pre this attempted re install and format. cheers all. Happy new year.

You should be able to do a chkdsk from the recovery console.
