According to Sony, Vaio owners shouldn't upgrade to Windows 10 until October

You get a years guarantee which is long gone in the case of the Sony Vaio. I know they cost silly money but that's not necessarily a reflection of quality. My Vaio cost me a couple of pounds and had a duff graphics chip. The poor fellow I bought it from paid well over a grand. If you are on the forum you should be able to have a go at fixing things yourself. A hard drive replacement is one of the easy jobs.

HD replacement was just an example... we're talking about support for Windows 10...Sony had originally said that they WOULD support Windows 10 on the Vaio - but that it was "delayed"... well, it's been almost a year, and still no official support.

I wouldn't hold your breath...

I don't see how they could support Windows 10 since they don't make computers anymore and Windows 10 came after they sold up. Apart maybe for cameras, where they also try to fleece the customer, Sony have little to offer. It's up to customers to look after themselves with Sony. I speak from experience after contacting them a few years ago over a Walkman and later my Vaio laptop. They were clueless even then and it is silly to expect any satisfaction from them. Unfortunately, their products sell at ridiculously inflated prices leading to unrealistic expectations from customers.

There is often legacy support... just because you've stopped making something doesn't necessarily mean you've stopped supporting it... People tend to buy things expecting that the manufacturer will still stand by it years down the line...

Your personal experiences notwithstanding, Sony actually does have a fairly large support program for their products (I actually had my Walkman replaced back in the 80s, free of charge, when the Fast Forward button stopped working). And their mid-level SLR cameras are actually quite nice...

Sony tends to charge a price premium for their products - when you pay a premium, you expect higher quality or better support (or both).

The 80's were a long time ago. Their cameras are more than quite nice but look at the price of some of the accessories. Apart from exchanging something you'll struggle to get any technical support. Checking the provenance of a component in a Sony PC and checking the manufacturers web site for suitable drivers is the best option. It's neat that many of us think that a high price denotes something really special. Expectations are often disappointed.

Didn't say they gave you anything for the premium.... said you EXPECT to gain something when you pay a premium. There's a reason Sony has been failing for decades and only the Playstation has kept them afloat.

Again though, the POINT of the article is that a company is responsible for their products - even if the company stops making them. If you bought a Vaio, you are still entitled to Sony support - but good luck getting it :(

Hey, Sony posted back then that it will support laptops that were fairly new. As you can see on their website, they have listed compatible models (some of them are not supported) and the problems they faced with certain models after upgrade. In other words, the company did not promise all VAIO owners with an official support. If your laptop is not supported yet, I don't it will ever be because it was mentioned that windows 8 laptops will get their drivers in Nov. 2014 while those of windows 8.1 in Oct. 2014.

I think the quality they provide is one of the best among other PC giants. I've been working in computer maintenance for years now, and it was really rare to see any VAIO laptop on my shelf. I know this does not fully explain the fairly high price, but if you want something good and durable, you gotta spend. You're right, their support can be disappointing sometimes. Sending this from a 5 years old Sony vaio :)

There's rather a high proportion of non functioning Vaios on eBay. Note the number with the notorious nVidia 8400 graphics chip problem that Sony were about the only company to keep denying any liability for. These poor folks often paid a grand or more and are under the delusion that their laptops would be easy to fix and maybe worth a hundred pounds or more. Or maybe they reckon others may have the same idea that Sony is a brand to be relied upon. Sony pulled off a con job for years. If you go back far enough they may have been still building their reputation but the last years for Sony Vaio were of a continual decline. Their last Vaios had a problem with duff batteries and were at risk of catching fire. On the positive side there is plenty of choice of used Sony spares from old laptops.

This has gone well off topic and if anybody wants to upgrade to Windows 10 they might just as well try it. If no joy they can roll back to their earlier OS. Waiting for Sony to give a lead is a bad idea. The date for the close of the free upgrade is fast approaching.
