Acer on Tuesday announced a pair of 7-inch tablets during a media event in New York. The Acer Iconia One 7 and the Iconia Tab 7 are pretty similar in form and factor although the latter just so happens to include a cellular radio for voice calls.

The Iconia One 7 features the aforementioned 7-inch IPS display operating at 1,280 x 800 and is powered by Intel’s Atom Z2560 dual-core SoC. It includes front and rear cameras, stereo speakers and a microSD card slot for added expansion.

The slate measures 8.9mm thick with a battery life of up to seven hours. It’ll ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean although Acer says it’ll be upgradeable to Android 4.4 Kit Kat at some point. Expect to see the Iconia One 7 show up by the end of June starting at $129.99 with 8GB of storage.

The Iconia Tab 7, meanwhile, carries a 1,280 x 800 resolution display and a quad-core MediaTek CPU. It comes in a bit lower in terms of battery life at just six hours but perhaps that has to do with the inclusion of the 3G radio for voice calls (sorry, no LTE here). Adding voice calling to a tablet is a strategy we’ve seen before although I can’t imagine it being too popular of an idea.

The Tab 7 is limited to Latina America, Asia and select parts of Europe and will be priced between $150 and $200 depending on region. It’ll be available in both 8GB and 16GB models in June, we’re told.

So why bother with the one with the cell radio? If you're so dead keen on a big screen phone device just buy one of those phablet things.
