Active X warning causes crashes.

I'm having an active x problem with an XP machine of mine. The programs in question (Painter 9, Avast anti-virus, windows service manager, and others I know I'm forgetting) have a window popup when they're run, which says this:

An ActiveX control on this page might be unsafe to interact with other parts of the page. Do you want to allow this interaction?

Both Yes and No cause the program to crash without an error message. I've played around with the active X options in IE to absolutely no effect.

    Any ideas?
