Added RAM doesn't show up in Vista System Info

I heard that Vista needed 2 G ram to operative properly. I added 2 1-G sticks to my Compac Presario. Noticed it ran the same and checked the system information which says it only has 958 mb of physical ram.

any ideas?

Reseat the memory, one at a time, being careful to firmly seat it into place...
Either it is not installed tightly, the board socket has been damaged, or the memory has been damaged. This is almost never a VISTA issue... but rather a hardware situation.

how do i tell if it's the board socket or the memory?

Test the memory in another machine. Test the memory from another machine in yours... being very careful, with a strong light, that it is seated properly.
Check your BIOS settings to see what is detected at each change you make on all motherboards used.
