Advice needed on HiJackThis log

Not open for further replies.
Hi,

I have a neighbour's XP-Home PC next to me - it is in a tragic state!

A whole bunch of bizarre processes are running, users cannot connect, IE keeps popping up asking me if I want to connect.

I suceeded in getting in machine thru safe mode, making myself an admin (great security!!!!), and owning/grabbing all users My Docs to CD.

Before I :knock: the hard-disk (I have the data, so it's not a major issue) ---- is there any way to recover? I'm a bit lost 'cos my own machines so far have been lucky (NAT, HW + SW firewalls might have helped to be lucky) enough to escape this crap so far.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Welcome to Techspot

Your PC is infested with Ad-ware junk and probably a couple of Trojans as well..

D/L and run www.lavasoft.de 's Adaware as well as
Spybot S&D from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Run the web-updates first on both programs after you install them, then run them.
Let them clean out what they can, they will not remove any normal program stuff.

When that is done, run HijackThis again and post the new log.

While you are at it, is that Norman AV a full or a free version? Norman is not exactly known as a good AV-program.

Best of luck.

Thanks for your reply.

Don't know where Norman came from... a freebie with the machine I guess. I use Norton Internet Security Pro as a SW firewall ...probably I will suggest that to him.

Fascinating progs!!!

Adaware:
Before run, CPU use between 20...30% when "idle"
SE 103 before u/d killed 1542/1543 bad guys.
u/d to 22Aug defs & reboot: 21/21 dead
(and I killed MRU for good measure)
After run CPU usage down to +/- 0% when idle

Spybot:
First run: 85/91 dead
Reboot: 4/6 dead
Attempted reboot froze the machine!! HW-reset
Reboot: 5/7 dead

HijackThis log after all of this is attached.

Glad you like those progs.
Keep running them at least once a week in future, and always do a web-update of the definitions first.

CISVC.EXE is an indexing service component. It's native form is not a virus/trojan/worm, however, it could be hijacked.
Your best bet is to just disable the indexing service. It's nothing but a resource hog anyway.

Click START -> Programs -> Admin Tools -> Services
Scroll down the list till you see Indexing Service.
Right-click -> Properties
Set "Startup Type" to Disabled
Click "Stop" and OK.

C:\PROGRA~1\CORNPL~1\DeleteTool.exe looks suspicious to me, can't find anything about it.

same for:
C:\WINDOWS\specialoffers3.exe

Kill this running process with Task Manager:
C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe

It is part of Search Assistant.
Then remove that line from system.ini
Go into Regedit to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
If you find the value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\windows sa, delete it and reboot the machine immediately.

See if Hijackthis can fix the following:

I am disappointed that neither Adaware nor Spybot found any of these.

Good luck again.

Thanks my friend, but the bastards won in the end.

I tried your hjt stuff, and I tried more aggressive hjt stuff just for fun. Housecall killed 17/21 trojans. I deleted several hundred files manually. I sniffed around in the registry until my eyes watered. The damn thing was still poisoned after 16 hours of poking at it with every stick I could find.

A couple of hours from now the new machine will be born with grisoft AV, soft-firewall (didn't decide which yet but I've got two hours of Win install to think about it), adaware, spybot, hjt.
I'm 86% through creating the partition now.

My dear neighbour will be discouraged from trying every download he can lay his cursor on, and I will also try to steer him away from porn sites in the future.

The upside is that I guess my neighbour owes me a beer!

Thanks again for your efforts.

A small party-barrel would be more like it!

Zonealarm makes a good (free) firewall. Sygate Personal Firewall is also free, and lets you tweak a lot more. Agnitum Outpost also have a free firewall.
Any of these 3 will do fine, unless you want the top (paid-for) firewall: Agnitum Outpost Pro.

For Pete's sake, stay away from any Norton/Symantec stuff.

When partitioning, make an extra partition for data, such as My Documents. The Windows partition should be set to:
2GB for W98 or ME, 4-5GB for W2K and 10GB for XP.
