After CHKDSK ran, 2 problems: audio driver down & Http 404 from IE repeats

Windows XP on Dell dimension 3000

within the last 2 weeks I followed the message to run CHKDSK, now I'm wondering what the heck have I done. Read other posts about running it more than once, done that too.

problem 1:
after doing so, the driver for my speakers kept dropping out.
I could get it to reload thru Control Panel and it would work for a while (mins) then stop again. Then wouldn't reload without rebooting.
I downloaded the latest SoundMax version 2005, rebooted, and things seemed fine. Now its getting dropped too.

Second weird thing>>>
I connect using Firefox but Internet Explorer keeps opening up on its own trying to connect to something but just shows a Http 404 Error Page message. In the morning there are 22 to 27 open IE windows of the same message.

What to do?

tm

the browser 404 error messages are from the website access to a non-exiting page

test your browser on the google.com homepage to prove your browser is running correctly
and then do some trival search, eg "gulf oil spill"

IE will connect

IE goes thru when I open it for something.

Why is it trying to access "any" page without me opening it? let alone a blank page.

What is giving it a reason to do so?

How to find that and stop it?

Thanks,
TM

delete all cookies and history and then close the browser

from an admin login, get a command prompt (run->cmd) and enter

arp -a
ipconfig /flushdns
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

and yes the QUOTES are needed

did what you said, yet

IE still tried to open up some 404 related web page.

Everything in the C prompt went through fine ... "successful" messages were listed after they were done.

Any other suggestion?

Thanks for your help! so far

1) it is possible that those are all REAL errors
2) a web page has many resources (like graphics, scripts and CSS formats) and
each must be loaded (and susceptible to a 404 on each)

can you post a URL for any of these 404s?
