All my media stuff keeps crashing i.e DVD player, WMP

hello can someone help, i put a dvd in and the player comes up then its starts to load then crashes this is the same with windows media player and quicktime mostly all media stuff, i have a hp g60 and running windows vista

Did you make any changes before this problem started?

Have you installed any new codecs recently?

Make sure you have got the latest versions of Media Player and Quicktime.

Check your graphics card in Device Manager and make sure the drivers are up to date and there are no conflicts reported. Right click the graphics adapter and look in the box under the general tab for any reported problems.

Soon after the system crashes reboot and then click on the Start button, type Event Viewer in the search box. Click on Event Viewer in the pop up menu and it will then open. Look in the center pane and try to locate the latest error reported and see if this relates to the crash and post here what it reports.

That all helps, now we can see that the problem relates to sound rather than graphics.

First I would try and replace/update your sounds drivers. Go to the HP support site and enter your PC name and model number, then select drivers and your operating system. Download the driver and save it to your desktop.

Go to Device Manager: Where it says, "Sound, video and game controlllers" click on the > and right click on the sound device, then click on uninstall. Go back to the desktop and double click on the new driver and it will install automatically.

Now test with a DVD and see what happens.

If that has not worked:

1. Press Start > type cmd in the search box. A box will open with CMD at the top, right click on it and select run as administrator. Another box will open, at the prompt, type chkdsk /r and press enter. (Note the gap between the k and the /)

2.Check disk will start to run but then it will say:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Type Y for yes, and press enter. Then reboot the computer into normal mode. Chkdsk will start when Windows begins loading again. Let all 5 phases run and don't use or turn off the computer. (The chkdsk process may take an hour or more to finish.)

3.Chkdsk finds any corrupted files and fixes them. Read the results of each phase as it finishes. During the final phase, it will notify you if it finds any corrupted files. It will also report on finding any bad sectors on the hard drive, these will be blocked from further use and the data on them moved.

4.When the Check Disk is done, it will finish loading Windows.

now its works windows dvd plays great but now i have no sound it said it reinstalled it

i right click on it but choice of run as administraror, i'm running xp and not windows 7 so the other link wont work for me right

OK, instruction 1 should read like this for XP.

To run the system file checker just type sfc /scannow (note the gap again) in the search box from the start menu and then hit enter, you will more than likely be asked for the XP disc to be inserted in the drive.

Now the correct driver for sound is installed see what the Event Viewer is reporting when it crashes, is it the same? If it is you might just have a virus, worth a quick scan with Malwarebytes. Download the free version from here, install it and let it update, then run a full scan and see if it finds anything nasty.

i tryed that thing in cmd

but it says
access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges
you have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode

Vista instructions are the same as for windows 7. Right click on CMD as it appears in the pop up list, then select "Run as Administrator", that will give you the elevated command prompt.

If this still causes a problem I would encourage you to run the Anti Virus scan I gave the link for in post 7.

What did this log file come from?? There appears to be two logs here about 4 1/2
hours apart.

The problem is clearly identified with your sound driver, I will look into this more later but please run Malwarebytes as suggested, link in post 7.

Another thing you should try is to run sfc /verifyonly in the same way you ran sfc /scannow. The above scan that you did may have got stuck on that one error with dsound.dll, it would be wise to see if there are any more corrupt files in the system. Please run this verify scan and post the log as before. First, delete the existing log so it doesn't get cluttered and confusing, the new scan will create a new log file.

Type the following command to replace the file with a known good copy of the file:
