Android’s market share in the US is up over the past three months according to the latest data from market analytics firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Google has Samsung to thank as its Galaxy S6 was the driving force behind the increase.

Kantar notes that Android’s market share increased 2.8 percentage points to 64.9 percent in the three month period ending in May. The first full month of sales allowed Samsung to grow its share of Android sales from 52 percent to 55 percent.

Carolina Milanesi, chief of research at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said the Galaxy S6 became the third best-selling smartphone in the US after the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S5.

Sales of Android-based smartphones were also fueled by LG, which was nearly able to double its smartphone market share in the US year-over-year. Unfortunately for others like HTC and Motorola, their shares – both year-over-year and period-over-period – saw declines.

It’s a different story among Europe's “big five,” however, as Android lost 2.9 percentage points compared to the same period a year ago. The big five consists of Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

Despite being on the market for more than nine months now, the iPhone 6 remains a strong seller. Kantar said it’s the top-selling smartphone in Great Britain, Germany, Italy and France. In China, it’s a three-horse race as Apple leads the market followed closely by Huawei and Xiaomi, in that order. The three companies are within 0.5 percentage point share of each other, Kantar said.
