annoying message

My system is xp home a can anyone help please
Help please
I have a message showing briefly on start up that my antivirus bullguard is shutting down and the pc is at risk and to press the ballon to see info,(I have only been quick enough on one occaison and doing this brought up a message from my xp antivirus) that did not help at all the message is wrong my bullguard antivirus does not shut down can anyone help please
