One of the many new features that iOS 10 will bring is an expanded range of emoji. Users of the upcoming operating system will have over 100 new or redesigned images to put in their messages, with many of the updated characters aimed at embracing diversity, but one alteration seems to be causing a lot of controversy: Apple is replacing its revolver emoji with a water pistol.

Apple has been under pressure from campaigners to change the gun emoji since last year. In the midst of continuing gun voilence in the US, the company became the primary influence behind the Unicode Consortium's recent decision to remove the Olympics-inspired rifle from the list of 2016 emoji candidates.

Now, Apple has gone one step further and replaced its gun emoji with one showing a plastic toy. The Cupertino firm hasn’t said if the decision is in response to the New Yorkers Against Gun Violence organization behind disarmtheiphone.com, which sent an open letter asking the revolver to be removed "as a symbolic gesture to limit gun accessibility."

Speaking about the change, Leah Barrett, NYAGV's Executive Director, told CNN: "Apple has stood up to the bullying tactics of the NRA and gun industry by showing that there are many more life-affirming ways to express oneself than with a gun."

It remains to be seen just what effect, if any, the move will have on gun crime and ownership. While groups calling for tighter gun control have welcomed Apple’s decision, it seems most members of the public feel it will change nothing.

Some of Apple’s other new emoji arriving with iOS 10 include women in professional roles that were previously only represented by men, such as detective and construction worker. There are also emoji for single parents, female athletes, and a new gay pride flag.

Permalink to story.

The phrase "f@rting in the wind" springs to mind!

You can still load it with dangerous 'ammo'. The problem is and always has been with the user of the object. Their best gesture would have been to not include either emoji.

Really? Don't conform Apple... One could say that is a violation of the freedom of speech. Is spell check going to start changing the word "gun" to puppy? This is beyond ridiculous.

The term "gun violence" is a misnomer. It doesn't exist. Guns aren't violent, they are inanimate objects - now people can be violent and will sometimes use a gun to accomplish their goal. If you want to label an object with a negative connotation, why not do it for other objects that are used by violent people? How about knife violence? Fist violence? Vehicle violence? Sharp pointed stick violence? And my recent favorite, Pokemon Go lure violence.

Does auto correct prevent you from typing "gun"? If not what's the point?
What do they plan to do about the gun simulators that live on the app store... keep making money on those I guess.

I'm sure it will have just as big an impact on gun ownership and crime as the launch of Forza Horizon 3 will on Lamborghini tractor sales.

Zero effect, but that's not the point. The point is to show they care. It's just another way iPhone owners can feel good about their iPhone. For me, it's another way I feel good about owning an Android.

Pretty sad that even phone ownership is turning into a political statement.

Here we go again....trying to use LOGICAL THINKING. Anti everything NUTS don't subscribe to that notion, anymore than CRIMINALS obey the law. ;)

Very true unfortunately. Let us hope they don't see the gun that folds up to look like a smart phone, they will crap a brick...

Lol less controversy so apple... Maybe you should change it to a suicide net? You know the ones used in your near slave foxcon factories?
