Samsung recently lost a bid that would have banned select Apple iPhones and iPads from being sold in the company's home country of South Korea. According to Reuters, a judge in the Seoul Central District Court threw out Samsung’s request to have Apple products banned from store shelves in addition to denying the tech giant’s request for 100 million won ($95,100) in damages.
Apple Korea spokesperson Steve Park said they were glad the Korean court joined others around the world in standing up for real innovation and rejecting Samsung ridiculous claims.
A spokesperson for Samsung said they were disappointed by the court’s decision and noted that as Apple has continued to infringe on their patented mobile technologies, they will continue to take the measures necessary to protect their intellectual property rights.
It was Samsung’s claim that Apple had violated patents related to short message display methods and group messaging features on various iDevices including the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and the iPad 2. The judge reportedly said the patents lacked progressivity and could easily be developed by other companies.
It’s the latest chapter in the long-running dispute between the two companies that dates back to early 2011. Since then, dozens of battles have been waged in courtrooms around the globe. In one of the more recent verdicts, a California jury awarded Apple $290 million as part of a retrial in which Cupertino was initially granted $1.05 billion in damages.
