Asus P5GD1-VM uCode loading error

Hello All
Help is required from the esteemed brains trust here.
I've just set up a previously used and good Asus P5GD1-VM mbrd with an intel 3.06 533 cpu and 2Gb RAM (4x512Mb). Set up with DVD (slave) and 200Gb IDE HDD (master) on the PCI_PCIIDE 1 connector.
All is not well on boot up - get the "Intel CPU uCode loading error". BIOS will not detect any hard drive on any position whatever. Finds CDs and DVDs on any position on the data cable but not any HDDs.
At F1 it boots OK to a Win98 startup disk. Have tested system with TuffTest Pro - all OK except it shows no hard drives connected.
The HDDs I've tried all check out OK on another machine.
I'm even using the on board video to eliminate the graphics as the problem.
Help urgently required to maintain sanity.

80 wire IDE cable with blue on the mobo and drive connected to grey?

24 AND 4 pin psu connections made to motherboard?

Bios recognizes IDE master and it is configured through 'Auto' selection?

Thanks for your reply CCT.
You may have to hold my hand on this one.
I did as you suggested and I've got BIOS seeing the HDD. I also had to set the HDD to the 'slave' jumper.
Now where do I connect the DVD to install the OS?
And I still get the 'u Code error' at the start.
Thanks again.

Again, thanks for helping CCT.
The more I read, the more confusing it gets.
Mother board has 2 IDE connectors - top one is blue (Primary) and bottom one is labelled PCI_PCIIDE1) which is black. I assume this is the secondary but they don't call it that.
I have a DVD drive and a HDD.
I have 2 80 wire cables and 2 40 wire cables.
Could you tell me what goes where?
I read the article and it talks about setting master in the middle in one part and then is contradictory elsewhere.
Thanks in advance.
Zorba

80 wire is for primary and 40 wire is for secondary.

80 wire Blue to mobo, master on end (black) jumpered master.

40 wire cd/dvd on end jumpered as slave.

BTW, what bios version does Bios show? And full details on the cpu are needed to ensure you have the RIGHT bios, eg,

Celeron D 345J (3.06 GHz, 533 FSB, LGA775) uses Bios 1005

Celeron D 346 (3.06 GHz, 533 FSB, revG1, LGA775) uses Bios 1014

Did as above - nothing detected at all.
Megatrend BIOS rev 1010 with Pentium 4 CPU 3.06GHz 524 533 LGA775.

Thanks for all your help.
Life's too short to spend hours unnecessarily on three year old motherboards.
Bought a new m'brd, cpu and memory and am on my way.
Again, thanks for your help.
