Most people in their golden years with a sizable nest egg would be content with living a comfortable retirement. Others, like Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, simply can’t resign to the idea of sitting around and waiting to die.

Bushnell has joined forces with Dutch video game company Spil Games. Together, they aim to develop and publish at least three mobile games with the first expected to arrive early next year.

Bushnell, often considered one of the founding fathers of the video game industry, said the future of gaming has a very strong mobile component, acknowledging that it’s where most people play games and it’s where the technology and ideas are developing most quickly.

When looking for a company to collaborate with, Bushnell said Spil Games had the right and unique combination of technical prowess, creative skills and distribution know-how.

The publisher and producer may not be a household name but the fact that they have more than 100 million monthly active users playing their titles demonstrates they’ve got their finger on the pulse of the industry.

Spil Games CEO Tung Nguyen-Khac said Bushnell’s decision to work with them is a huge validation of its approach to mobile gaming, adding that their team is excited to be with Bushnell and feed off his energy and creativity.

Bushnell is of course best known for founding Atari but you may also be surprised to learn that he founded another American staple, Chuck E. Cheese (then Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza-Time Theaters). At 73, Bushnell is proof that you’re never too old to create something new. Just think, Colonel Sanders didn’t open his first KFC restaurant until he was 62 years old.
