I have downloaded the right audio drivers,

RealTek ALC655

I have the MSI K8N Neo-3 FSR mother board.

it reckonizes it and everything, it just wont play sound, ive tried playing sound out of my speakers, and regular headphones..

any help would be much appreciated.

Did you download and install the drivers from MSI support site? Have you run MSI's Internet based update program?

i did download the drivers from the site, but thanks i will try the online update program.

will update back here with what happened.

PCI sound cards are cheap and good... Go for a sound card and ditch trying to use the on-board sound

i tried the live update, it gave me the up to date realtek ac 97 drivers. v 5.30

it still is not working =/

Could you try one simple approach

Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc
Click on the + sign on your Sound\Audio heading
Right click on your realtek ac 97 device and select disable
Then right click on the same device and select enable
Then check sound again ie Start->Run->C:\WINDOWS\Media\tada.wav

Failing that, go back to Device Manager (Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc)
Click on the + sign on your Sound\Audio heading
Right click on each device, and select remove (or un-install)
When you have removed all the devices (that you can) under Audio
Run the Live Update again

Please let us know if it worked :)

when i go to install the v5.30 realtek ac97 drivers, it says it isnt tested for windows XP.

and doesnt let me install...

Normally you can just continue
It's just MS not being aware of this new driver

There's a Driver Signing button in the HardWare Tab of your System properties

What?

Ok Just go to Start->Run-> sysdm.cpl
Then click on Hardware Tab
Then click on Driver Signing button
And you can select "ignore", and make it the default action
Apply Ok Ok

Try this:
Start-> Run -> rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL mmsys.cpl,,0
When the Audio properties Window opens, confirm sound is not Muted
And confirm the proper device is selected, under Audio tab too :)

ok done that.

heres my HJT log

Moderator Edit
