when i put in a new cd into my drives i get no response whatsoever from the autostart feature nor does the icon change on the drives when i open up my computer. this has plagued my comp since 2001 but never thought it was a biggie (i thought it was a known bug of winXP). what happened and continues to happen is that if i restart my comp with a cd in the tray the icon will take over on the drive and wont go away even if i remove the cd. what i do is remove it and restart my comp. this is annonying. ive tried to look at microsoft.com about a year ago but couldnt find anything of anyuse. if anyone knows how to fix or upgrade this let me know. much thanks

sounds like a problem with icon cache. If you have TweakUI(or one of several other similar utilities) it is easy to fix by repairing Icon cache.

You can also fix it like this:

At a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder
Remove the hidden attribute from the file:
type "attrib -h shelliconcache" (without quotes) and press ENTER.
Delete the file:
type "del shelliconcache" (without quotes) and press ENTER.
Log off and back on and the default icons should be restored.
