Averatec Laptop Dim Screen

I'm fixing a Averatec Laptop for my father's co-worker and i'm clueless. The monitor is dimmed to where you can barely see anything.

Model no. 5400 series

I'm guessing the monitor is just going out?

You have tried turning the brightness up already? Usually hold the function key while tabing the key with the sun and either a plus sign or and arrow up symbol. Also is it like this when it is plugged and when it is not?

Yes, holding down the Fn key and ^sun key do nothing. I dont have the AC adaptor for the laptop so i don't know if it does it plugged into the wall.

Is the battery old/weak? Without the AC adapter you will have a problem correctly troubleshooting.
I would get one first.
