What do people think is the best VPN server and client software out there?

I've seen some hardware options that look promising such as this:
    http://netgear.com/Products/VPNandSSL/SSLVPNConcentrators/SSL312.aspx?detail=Specifications

Which is attractive because it doesn't need client software... apparently you just login with a browser and that somehow connects you to the other network.

Anyway, looking for the best client server VPN solution... I'd like it to be entirely software based if possible... but if you think hardware VPN is superior then I'll listen to you...

Hamachi, although I've used it only to play LAN games across the country and some Windows file sharing.

What kind of features do you need?

I like hamachi, but I don't like that it depends on a system I have no control over.

I need something that is self contained... that doesn't depend on some company that could die tomorrow...

In that case, you have only one option - OpenVPN. Everything else would be something you don't have complete control over.

What do you think are the odds of giants like Microsoft or Cisco ending up dead tomorrow?
