Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from https://www.techspot.com/downloads/2083-adobe-reader-dc.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader and install one of two free alternatives:

- Foxit PDF Reader from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

- PDF-XChange Viewer: http://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Your computer is clean

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point, using following OTL script:

Run OTL

  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:

Code:
:OTL
:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[emptyjava]
[CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
[Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post resulting log.

2. Now, we'll remove all tools, we used during our cleaning process

Clean up with OTL:

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

3. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

4. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

5. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

6. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

7. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

8. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly.

9. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): https://www.techspot.com/downloads/4898-secunia-personal-software-inspector-psi.html. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

10. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

11. (Windows XP only) Run defrag at your convenience.

12. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

14. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

............ well crap.

It's happening all over again, Broni. Exact same problem as the beginning. Black screen, system protection tab is gone, it's the exact same thing. This time is even worse because I've only been browsing trusted normal sites since your last post. Neogaf, gamefaqs, hotmail, just normal sites.

I can tell you when this happened though. Actually, both times I got hit with this was when I just left my computer for a few hours with my monitor off. When I come back and turn on my monitor, black screen.

I can still get into safe mode, but I don't know how long I can keep on getting it just like last time.

EDIT WITH MAJOR UPDATE: I was apparently able to access system restore. Apparently, there was a new restore point made when I was afk. The restore point was prior to a Windows update. I used it and now I'm able to boot up vista normally again, system protection tab is there, and everything seems to be as it was a few hours ago. However, I'm scared that whatever infection that's causing this is still there. Also, if this isn't the infection's fault, what do I do about the Windows update? I can't just tell my computer to never update ever again.

Did it happen when you were going through my previous reply?
I just need to know how far back did you go with system restore.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but I think the answer you're looking for is that the only thing I've done so far is run OTL with your script. So yes, I kind of was going through your last reply.

Just to make clear.
You were at step 3:
3. Make sure Windows Updates are current.
...and it happened after that?

OK, I think it'd be easier to make a mini timeline. It'll just be an example.

2pm: leave computer
6pm: go back to computer and black screen

During those 4 hours, the virus/malware/whatever came back AND Windows had an update. The restore point was immediately prior to the Windows update, so it'd also be some time during those 4 hours.

OK, clear now.
Your computer is clean so it's definitely not malware related.
I suspect it was something about updates
Go back to Windows updates.
If there are any to install make sure you UN-check any non-MS related updates.
Then install them.

Sorry, I must've edited my post when you were writing your's. I found it but they're all MS related. Should I still just go with it?

I was kind of scared to update Windows for a few days, but then I just went for it anyway. No problems so far. So now I have no idea how I got the same infection again that 2nd time.
