Blank Blue Screen of death after user log in

I am running windows xp, I started my computer today and after login there where no icons, no start tool bar, nothing but a blue screen. Please any suggestions would be helpful.

Try to boot windows in safe mode....does the same issue happen?

Did you install any new hardware of software in the last few days?

    Any virus protection?

    system specs?

No, haven't installed any software/hardware. It just boots and windows username screen opens to log on. Once I select username and fill in my password, the next screen I see is the blue blank screen.

    Safe mode

I agree with above. Before Windows loads press f8 and try starting in safe mode or use "last configuration that worked".

No changes to hardware or software before this happened?

Windows update set to download and install updates automatically?
