I have a homemade computer which was great running win 78.
Spec is AMD - K7 499 Mz with 512 Mb ram
hdd is a quantum fireball ka 13.6
video is nvidia fx5200
power supply 300w Aopen

The problem is I wiped the drive, f disked it and formatted so the install was clean.

Win xp went through the installation quite well but at the last boot up of xp for the first time, the system started displaying the logo and then died, black screen.

I can get it to boot in safe mode, checked for any problems no yellow indicators in the hardware setup.

But what ever I do to boot Win xp properly the same result goes so far then just comes up with the black screen.

Please help at my wits end.

Is that installed from a slipstreamed disk or a basic SP2 or what?

Was the FX5200 in there before?

Did you game with the old Win98 (I assume 98)?

Have you tried checking ram via Memtest86?

edit: and why fdisk? Did you partition that little drive? If so, sizes?

Boot problem with new install xp

Install was from a Dell OEM reinstallation XP prof CD with Key etc. SP2. Kosher

No, the other card with the Windows 98 wasa ragefury 128. Would not run, blue screen.

No not into games

No, I have not checked ram

Could be the psu is too small. Have a look at voltages in Bios (if they show).

Can you boot to Normal using vga mode?

I will attempt to look at the voltages if they are displayed.

Have not tried the vga boot how do I go about it.

Thanks

That is one of the Boot options you can find by pressing (whatever key your computer uses) right after turning on the power.

Check the manual.

Hi Canukistan
I may have to maybe buy another PSU with more than 300Watts of output. Any suggestions. Nothing too expensive.
