Busted audio/headphones jack on VAIO VGN-FS630

My nephew broke the audio jack by carelessly pulling out the headphones cord. Now, when I plug in the headphones or speakers, only one channel works and the sounds comes out from the laptop speakers as well (which shouldn’t be the case if the headphones/speakers are plugged in). I was wondering if I should take a risk of taking the laptop apart and trying to check for any loose contacts on the audio card.

I’m in England now, which makes the matter worse, as it so expensive to repair or replace the audio socket on this laptop without the warranty (one estimate I got was $250). I understand that it’s hard to give advice on this problem, and will really appreciate any recommendations that you guys might have.

Thanks a lot in advance.

$250?!

Taking the thing apart, (re)soldering the three joints of the jack and putting the computer back together shouldn't take more than 90 minutes. Anyone charging you $170 an hour is a robber. Maybe they were talking about replacing the (possibly proprietary shape) jack?
