    Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Have you actually run the checkdisk utility? If so what were the results?

Maybe doing a repair install of Windows will help. I`m assuming that you`re running either Windows XP or 2000.

Instructions for doing this can be found HERE

If you do a repair install, just remember that you will have to do all the Windows updates again.

    Norton?

Try disabling Norton Auto-Protect, at system start and let us know if the error is still there?

This worked for me, I posted more on it here: (http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=402617)
Would be great if someone could figure out what is going on and give a fix.
