Can Xbox 360 controller be used as a PC gaming controller?

I was at the local K-Mart and noticed that the Xbox 360 Wired Controller has what appears to be a USB plug, does this mean it can be used as a PC controller, if So Ill probally buy one despite Im not gonna be getting an Xbox 360 for some time now.

I plugged mine in and windows not only recognized it, but it also found a driver for it and even knew that it was an xbox 360 controller. So as far as i know, that's a yes... I just don't feel much like testing it in a game.
