Hi

I am about to give up on this problem, and I hope you can help me because I I now have a personal vendetta against this fng infection (even though it's not even my laptop). I have tried quite a few things over the last couple of days and don't remember everything I've tried. But here's an overview:

Installed all latest patches/security updates -- except for SP2.
Installed Adaware, Spybot, Spysweeper, and Norton AV 2005. Got latest updates for all them and ran them several times in safe mode. Got to a point where all were not reporting anything except for AV -- each time, even after seemingly deleting/fixing found problems a different infection Trojan Horse, with a different file name would come up, all in Windows\system32.
All the while I noticed that whenever I tried to use IE I kept getting some (not many) popup windows with the Aurora - part of the ABI network heading. Through some research on that I saw different suggestions and followed them all (downloaded/ran the fix nail.exe program, fixed any unsafe entried with hijackthis (including the 127.0.0.1 proxy override, the F2 nail.exe, etc.) -- to no avail. The last time I ran Ewido it did find Spyware.betterinternet (had not found it before) and said that it cleaned it. But the problem remains. Nail.exe keeps coming back (even though I also went into cmd prompt and did the /fullremove).

I did notice on one of these threads someone making a point of not installing hijackthis on the desktop, which is what I did. But since the person doesn't say why, I'm not sure how crucial or essential this is. (that's why it's always good to say why to do or not do something).

Can someone please help me figure out what is going on? I would LOVE to kill this infection

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention...

I read this somewhere else...

"Ewido seems to detect and remove one version which can
also be removed by disabling its service, booting into
Safe Mode and using HijackThis to get rid of the nail and
exe (with Explorer and Iexplore turned off)"

I did NOT have Explorer and Iexplore turned off during any of my scans for Ewido and anything else. Could this be part of the reason I cannot get rid of it the infection?

If your Regedit still works, boot into Safe Mode and run it.
Do a Find for all instances of nail.exe, as well as Aurora. Delete any entries you find by right-clicking them, select Delete ond confirm.
Exit Regedit.
Now run the nailfix again that you have already.
Make sure your Explorer shows all hidden and system files.
Check c:\windows, c:\windows\system and c:\windows\system32 for nail.exe, just in case.
If you find it, delete it while you hold down the shift-key, to stop it from going to Recycle Bin.
Then run HJT and fix (if still there):

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I will try your suggestion as soon as I get back from vacation next Wednesday.

Have a great weekend.

Latest HijackThis log

OK, I am back from vacation and ready to tackle this   Trojan.

Before I forget, one more question -- how does the startup items figure in all of this? She has many startup items that I do not recognize -- hasn't been an issue because I have them all disabled. But I want to make sure I don't overlook them if it seems as if I've finally gotten rid of the Trojan and I want to now boot normally and with the startup items enabled.

I followed your instructions, and here's the latest HijackThis log (the F2 is still there! arrrrggghhh):

Download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?...5010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 at system startup.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

If you have broadband or fast internet speed, please run an online scan at Trend Micro or RAV Antivirus.
Please select the “autoclean” option when using Trend Micro.

Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Read the first lines, I copied it from someone else, but thought it only fair to give him the honour.
It's not copyrighted, but it works!
