    Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Could it be that you have either a faulty Windows disk or maybe a faulty Cd drive?

    Just a thought.

Partition your harddisk in 2 partitions, one for XP (10-20GB), the rest for data and whatever.
Fisrt partitions should be formatted in NTFS, the second in FAT32.
Copy the complete contents of your XP-CD to the second partition.
Go to www.bootdisk.com and download the file to make a Windows98SE bootfloppy.
Make that floppy, boot from it, then go to the second partition on the harddisk, and start the XP installation from there. (either Setup.exe or Install.exe, don't know)

Later on, you can reformat that second partition in NTFS format.
