Cannot log on to Windows with new user account

[Laplace]

I have windows XP Pro. I tried to create a new user account. The account was created OK (with adminsitrator privilege), but when I tried to log on, the process started but then showed a message saying 'logging off' and I got back to the log-in screen. I tried several variants all with the same result.

My original account continues to work OK.

Any suggestions welcome.
