I think you should boot into safe mode and attempt a system restore. It sounds like that might be the easiest fix for you. To get into safe mode, tap the F8 key a split second before the first "Windows" logo boot screen appears.

My Computer, Explorer, Control Panel and other settings won't stay on.

Hello,

I found this thread using Google. My computer started having this problem this morning.

I have Windows XP. I first started having the problem this morning. My wife said she was able to get into "My Computer" this afternoon, but when I tried it, it wouldn't stay on.

Wha happens for me is when I click on a program, the window appears, then immediately disappears. Then all of the icons on the desktop momentarily disappear then reappear. It seems to common to various programs connected to Windows (i.e. any of the settings functions such as control panel, internet connections, printers and faxes, as well as My Documents or My Pictures.

Has anyone fiigured out what is causing the problem and what is the solution?

Well.. the first thing I would recommend is downloading spybot search and destroy and running that, as well as a virus scan, if you haven't already. Those can cause many similar issues.

Can you tell us what operating system you're running? Also, what virus scanner you use, and any other symptoms you see?

Assuming you use XP, I would suggest running spybot and AV Scan first, then trying the sfc /scannow option.

btw- Welcome to Techspot!

I have the same problem...
I can't open my computer, or even internet explorer (using firefox right now)
I'm running on windows XP

I just wanted to say if it helps that i have different accounts, and the problems occurs only on 2 of them (I still have another account where My computer opens normally without explorer restarting)

so just in case if this could help anyone...
