Can't get Java or Adobe reader to install

Hello, this is my first post here. I am needing help with an older laptop its a dell latitude d630 has windows xp on it, and im running through firefox browser, some of the programs like java and adobe havent been updated since 2008. I some how got the adobe flash player to download after removing the old version but everyting else is giving me problems. Java will not load it keeps saying crrupt file,I still get this msg even though I have removed the old version of java, I thought I could fix it in safemode but no such luck it tells me administrator settings stopped java from downloading onto the computer, even though im running through the admin its self. And as for the adobe reader when I go to the adobe website to do the download it doesnt give me the download link to start a download. Maybe you can help because ive looked all over the web for 4 days trying to get some updates for this thing.
