hey guys / gals, I have recently formatted my main pc and eveything seems to be ok, except I cant access it from my laptop no more, have enabled file & printer sharing, run network wizard, but the PC still doesnt appear in network places. anyone have any ideas?

Okay do this too see what you got going on...

1. did you install the drivers correctly and does windows see the NIC
2. first does the router see the laptop
3.

click on start
click on run
type: cmd
type: ipconfig /all

if you see for the ip address 169.xxx.xxx - this would be a private IP address and you don't want that. To fix this you need to open the control panel click on network connections then..

right click on your LAN card
then click on properties
then uncheck all the boxes
click apply or okay
then reboot the computer

The system should reset itself..

be sure to enable file/print sharing in the firewall also

all systems must have the same workgroup name (and in like Upper Case)

disable simple file sharing
delete any instances of it in the laptop
in laptop try to map new drive
xp firewall bites
outpost more secure ,better ,easier to manage

click on start
click on run
type: services.msc

make sure computer browsing is started and enabled (automatic)
make sure network connections is started and enabled (automatic)
make sure workstation is started and enabled (automatic)

As XP/Home only uses Simple Sharing and given that IT IS SIMPLE,
I disagree.

Mapping a new drive will work with Either style of windows sharing as both
assume you have the password :)

ANY firewall is better than none and the Windows version makes sharing trivial.

I repeat xp firewall sucks ,if a firewall blocks what you don't want it to.
do they have pro or home thats a good question
home must use simple file share
in pro it can be disabled and I would not use it if I had pro

A simple ping test for starters would be good :)
Try and ping each PC from both PC's and post back with how you go.

Also an ipconfig /all from both would help.
From there we can troubleshoot where the problem is.

Also, make sure both PCs are able to web browse BEFORE doing this.
