here's the specs and then the problem.

2.7ghz celeron
512 ddr ram
soyo p4i845pe v1.0 mobo socket 478
120 gb hitachi deskstar sata hdd
40 gb western digital ide hdd
30 gb maxtor ide hdd
audigy 2 platinum
an array of pci cards but that is really irrelavant

this ight be lenghty and alot of it mught be erroneous but to give a complete picture of whats goin on heres how it goes.

the parts mentioned above minus the sound card, western digital hdd and hitachi sata is is about to be given to my grandparents when my new stuff gets here in the next few days (thanks to newegg)

the hitachi hdd is my primary drive and will be reformatted and put in the new rig that is on its way. i was bored and set up xp pro on the maxtor that is not staying with me. it had all my important stuff backed up on it. not a big deal i was going to back up all my stuff on the western digital drive off of the sata drive so i didn't care that i reformatted all my backup.

i got lazy and didn't back up all my data from the hitachi on to the western digital and well i think i got a virus and my xp pro has become unbootable on the hitachi. it hangs at the black screen with the scrolling blue bar and then reboots its self. so basically i am pretty sure i am S.O.L on getting back my music porn etc. about 20 gigs or so of stuff i have collected.

my mobo only supports a single sata hdd (no other type of sata device) it is only detected as the master no way to make it the slave. it shares an ide channel. i ahve three ide channels total.

i wanna boot up with the maxtor ide and have the hitachi sata just show up as another drive. i can't seem to do that. i have tried tweaking the bios. jumpering the ide drive right. and no matter what the install of xp which doesn't fully boot is always seeked out first. i hope this has made enought sense for somebody to help me out. the only other thing i can think of that might work would be to get an external enclosure to put the drive in and use it through a usb. anway if somebody could shed some light on it for me that wouldbe great.

simpler way of putting it

i failed to mention or it wasn't made clear that i want to get my data off of the sata drive before i do a fresh install on my new rig thats coming. unless someone has a definite way of doing it i can bet i have already tried it. i am horribly stumped and am going crazy. i need the eqiuivalent of jumpering two ide drives to make one boot and the other not boot if that makes anymore sense.

yup

it won't boot up at all. it just hangs at the splash screen for like a minute or so and then i almost see a bsod. not completely sure but then it reboots with the screen... windows did not boot properly and gives me several options which all do not work. using any of the options that are available when i press F8 do not allow xp to boot either. it could be the drive is dead but i doubt it. its just under two years old. i've even tried selecting the ide drive to boot in the raid bios utility (its the highpoint 371) and then i get the disk boot failure message. no matter what i do the xp installation on the sata is detected first. i ahve a crappy improv comedy rock band (we are shared on itunes under either the bee bee gees or spicy placenta - depends on who else was with us - mario kart is the best song you'll laugh your *** off - we were before tenacious d got big) and our masters are sitting on there. i feel freakin dumb for overwriting the drive that had all my stuff backed up on.

Have you tried disconnecting the Sata drive and in the BIOS set the Maxtor to master. Once you have that working, try to reconnect the sata as a slave.
it is only detected as the master no way to make it the slave.
Are you sure?

MY point is are you sure u have a virus or are you having a RAM or PSU failure which prevents you from booting period? Can you boot from the new install XP Maxtor drive when you disconnect the sata?

I'll wait for your reply.

Still waiting. Oh..... send.

the xp on my maxtor ide works fine. i'm using it right now. i could try to do a repair install of xp but i have never gotton that to work on any computer. always screws up. i don't think it's a memory issue since i am using the computer right now just with my other hard drive. i've also contacted soyo about this. the manual states that when the jumper to wake the sata plug is set (shares an ide channel) the sata is detectd as the master. if i have an ide drive even on the ide channel that is sahred it must be set to slave for the ide drive to even be detected. I haven't heard anything back yet. originally i thought it was the power supply. i tried unplugging everything but the hard drive and still it won't boot with only that. i have a 500 watt power supply on the way with my new pc. i will try that when it arrives. the current one i have is 430 watts. i don't know anyone that has an extra one laying around. i only hang out with dirty hippy people who don't know jack (at a loss). the computer repair place two blocks away from my house used to be really cool and would let me use their shop for a little while if i did all the stuff myself but they won't let me work on my own rig anymore. they want me to giv them a hundred bux to start looking at it. screw that.

could this work I wonder, maybe a few of the HDD specialist here can answer that? http://tmg4apc.com/product_info.php?products_id=114&gclid=CJOz7OuO5oMCFRZWPgodaWuqGg
Reasonable price to save your data.

Ok so maybe I have it backwards with the above link (SATA to IDE)
Got this little tidbit off this forum:http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread10331.html
I was having the same problem so I finally broke down and spent $15 on a IDE to SATA converter (my new slave drive was IDE, and master drive was SATA) once you hook up the converter, set the jumper on the IDE drive to master and connect it to your next available SATA port on the motherboard. You shouldn't have any problems using the converted drive as a slave. By the way SATA drives dont have any jumpers and are all considered "master" drives. Which is why I said to set the jumper on the converted drive to master. You can use your BIOS to adjust the boot device priority in order to select which drive you want to run your OS from.

Let me guess you're going to tell me you don't have another SATA port?
In that case maybe just wait until your new parts arrive and do all this using your new mobo.

That's it I'm outta here.

Did you check that link on Repair? It isn't the "repair" option that you initially get, this one is basically a reinstallation of windows on top of itself, but without screwing up your programs.

ok well it turns out that it ended up being a bad sector on the sata hdd. i kept getting errors when i would try to do the reapri using the drive fitness software from hitachi. however i broke down and went and bought some brand new floppies and tried that and the drive fitness repaired the bad sector and the drive cranked right up and i am using it now. i did back everything up since it might go bad again til i get my new stuff. it finally shipped and i wil get it thursday. thanks to all who tried to help.
