CCleaner has stopped working

By the way I have redone my system and now have CCleaner up and going again. I'm not sure why it failed to work, definitely not ruling out something I might have done. I do find it strange though that everything else seemed to work fine.

I really like CCleaner too but to be rolling back to an earlier OS, reinstalling Windows 10 or both together as I've seen here strikes me as a complete over-reaction. You are likely to have this problem again at some time so I'd rethink the strategy. It's free software so you can expect the occasional glitch.

Is this to me or Cliffordcooley? If me, I did not intentionally go back to W7. I truthfully don't know what or how it happened, I just saw screen say FactoryImage restore
Reformatting the Windows partion & it went on. Ending with W7 & losing 500 gb's of pics & stuff :(.

@cliffordcooley , on this pc to get to the boot menu I need to reboot & at the menu I tap Esc to go there & use the arrow keys to choose cd drive. Am I then supposed to use the power to force a shut down because otherwise it boots back up to W7? I've tried 3 times so fay. Grrr

Cliff told you to wipe the drive before you try the "clean install". I told you to install, (or rather "image" your Windows 7installation to a spare drive FIRST, before you do anything else.

This is what I told you before, you keep asking questions, getting answers, then pay no attention and go ahead and do it your way.

If you want to change the boot order, do it in BIOS!

Now, whatever media you're going to install 10 from, goes 1st in the boot order. If it's USB, you have to enable "boot from USB" 1st. If you're using a DVD, then the optical drive must be 1st in the boot order You set the boot order, load the DVD in the drive, power down, and the machine should boot from the CD drive. But the DVD has to be loaded BEFORE you power back on.

Now, this has gone on for months. Have you ever considered M$ doesn't want CCleaner to work, since it wipes out Windows log files that it wants to cull via its own telemetry?

Yes the system BIOS is where you set the first boot device. And the optical drive should be set to the first device to boot a CD/DVD.

Actually I said that as well by saying to make a system image of Windows 7.

This will have to wait till I can get more CDRW discs.

You haven't quite figured out you need to be very specific when dealing with a thread such as this. Yes, you did say, "create an image", I thought I did a pretty good follow up by telling where the software could be obtained for free, and to create the image on another drive entirely. That way, when this Windows 10 sh!t goes south again, all you have to do is swap out the drives, and connect to the web.

Not too sure if this will help, I'm using Win 10 home, latest build all updated.
Have used CCleaner since Win 95 days (I think) and use it often.
I have noticed that two or three times that CCleaner will open but then will hang with the circle where the mouse cursor should be. The program won't work, and the only way out is via Task manager, and to stop the program from there.
But 99% of the time it works perfectly.

Okay, Here is some for what it is worth information. My wife's 4 month old HP with win 10 suddenly decided that Ccleaner would not work on Win 10. This just happened after running vrs. 5.01 for 4 months. Tried to reinstall but kepted getting the flag Ccleaner will not work in windows 10 please click here which sends me to piriforms website. So I went to the website where I saw that the free version no longer did cleaning. I then googled Ccleaner knowing that some places carry older issues. I found filehippo, checked and found the older versions page and downloaded every version from 501 to current 527. I tried to install ever 5th version or so with everyone giving me the same warning flag that Ccleaner is not compatible with win 10, until version 522 did install. It does appear to clean as well as it always has in the past. I adjusted my settings to not update etc. so for now at least I am good to go. My personal opinion is while based only on this experience and information is that somehow piriform found a way to send some update out so prior versions would not work with windows 10 which would force people to upgrade to the newer versions that need to be paid for to get the cleaning benefits (only a guess). Ccleaner has always worked well for me so I am considering upgrading anyway due to the added features that come with it. Additional I caution everyone to be aware that not all computers have the same boot processes. On some, the old press F2 or F8 , 11, 12 or ESC are long gone, case in point I have some HP's that require you to abort the startup 3 times before they will go into the diagnostics mode and you have to work your way through a menu of items before getting to the bios settings. Just FYI

OK, as has been said, "hindsight is always 20/20". Thus, this is a scolding. Some program vendors will allow you to download past versions of their programs, but a majority (?) won't. Hence, at the risk of being called a Luddite and technical incompetent, I never update a program which is working correctly. Nor do I "recycle" earlier versions of installers, reasoning that the "updated version", may not be to my liking, may have more advertising, or may not work correctly.
Strongly agree - - If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! That's a conservative, pragmatic choice for systems operations.

btw: My favorite free Sync program went to a Fee policy (unbeknownst to me) some time back and as I too don't willie-nillie update, I still have an operational free Sync

CCleaner is a great freeware program but I don't understand why folks get so upset when a version has a glitch. I just downloaded the latest version 5.27 from the Pirisoft website. It installed with no problems whatsoever and I ran the registry cleaner and cleanup functions too. No way do you need to pay for the Pro version. Just be patient and either wait for the next version or use a version that worked for you. I am using Windows 10 Home 32 bit.

The problem here was not "a" version. It was multiple version, even including the newest. A problem where the installer refuses to run as well as the application.

I am however convinced this is not strictly a CCleaner problem, but instead somehow a Windows problem or perhaps a combination of the two.

I'm now on the latest version & it is working fine :) Since I am not the techie others in here are, I'm just going to say I'm glad its working & hope it continues to do so :)

Well anybody who is reinstalling Windows 10 simply because CCleaner isn't working is making life unnecessarily difficult. If you go into the settings for CCleaner and disable it from letting you know about newer versions life is much simpler. New versions rarely add more functionality. You can then upgrade maybe every six months or when the mood takes you. Being obsessed with updating everything is bad practise and inviting trouble. Keeping security software and Windows updated is however important.

Firstly; I did start a thread of my own on another forum, asking for a solution that has yet to be answered. And for that matter the answer has yet to be presented here.

Secondly; The problem started when the version installed failed to run. Therefor presenting a need to install a newer version that also coincidentally failed to run.

So unless you can provide a fix, without a solution otherwise, reinstalling the OS is in my opinion the only fix. I don't want to have to repeat all this again, I hope you get it this time.

I would never reinstall a complete OS simply because some utility like this is failing - - after all, the system itself is still sane.

Since I started this thread, the pc crashed on 12/15 & took me a while to get back to W10. Ccleaner was one of the first apps I reinstalled & have updated it since but after reading the posts in here, I won't update it as often as I did. :)

When an application that normally runs fails to run or install, I'm not so sure about how sane the OS really is. It certainly adds to my sanity by going ahead and fixing the issue (even if that requires a reinstall).

Here's a little conundrum related to the thread.

On my main desktop running Windows 10 I was unable to get some downloaded programs to install and other programs wouldn't run. Actually, this included CCleaner. The box would come up for whether I wanted to allow the software to make changes by running or installing the program with the option to select Yes or No. I've always been able to use the mouse to do this but clicking on Yes or No does nothing. Control, alt and delete wasn't opening Task Manager either, but right clicking the start button to do so worked.

Eventually, after near paranoia about possible trojans withholding my administator rights, I discovered that if I used the direction keys on the keyboard to select Yes and then pressed the enter key the programs would run or install. I'm still baffled by this. On my other computers the mouse does the job as always.

Hi, Updated my CCleaner (free) the other day, all works as it should in Win 10 64 bit.
I would have thought that Piriform would have tested everything works on Win 10, as more PC users will be moving over to it, or already have done.
Not tried this myself, but an option might be to run CCleaner portable version from a flash memory stick, might be worth a try.
