Cd drive jammed

i went to open my cd drive but it wouldnt open and made scratching sounds, i did the manual eject and the tray popped open 1/4 inch, but it is still jammed, cd is inside of there but it is in the tray the right way, what should it do? i think the drive is shot, 7 yrs old now, so should i just take the drive apart to get the cd out and get a new drive?

It may be fixable, being and older drive the tray may be driven via a small belt, if that has stretched you can cut a small section out and superglue the 2 ends back together. I did it to a scsi cdrom some time ago and it lasted another year and a half like it.

okay, got the cd out but now the drive is stipped, decided to get a new drive

Well I have a second hand Liteon and its never given me any grief (mind u, ive hardly used it).
