I cannot play any type of CD or DVD on my disk drive. It was making a very loud whirring noise, so I opened it, and took the disk out, then closed it again. When I tried to put the disk in again. Nothing happened, and the computer think's there is nothing in the disk drive. I can't think of anything else that would have caused this.
Is there something wrong with the laser or cable?

It is a LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165H6S

Yeh but it's been working fine for about a year, and then it just stopped working all of a sudden. I might have damaged the IDE cable when working on some other issues inside the PC

That is how DVD drives brake, just suddenly, if you are able to see the drive in your 'my computer' then it is not and IDE cable problem, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see it there.

Things to Check:

+ Check IDE Connections in the PC
+ Uninstall Drivers and reinstall again
+ See if BIOS detects the drives and if you can boot from them.
