you can
the setup
c drive ide 80 gb
e and f drive are sata drive partions
client had issues with minor that was admin on machine (bad move)
anyway I was called in to fix this
the sub told me there was nothing on c drive windows reads system and it was empty
It looked empty
sata is 300gb drive
e partion at 120 f partion 120 machine not setup for 137 or 42bit limit (kids)
the boot up was messed up showed 3 xp boots 2 did not work
I reformatted c drive and it said there was 20gbs of data on drive fromatted anyway
after that the sytem of was gone
I had moved a boot.ini and other files over to e drive and setup to boot from this drive
would not boot
I had to load os back on c drive and make a boot.ini to boot again from e
with the boot bios being c first
I now had ownership of drives
is there a way to safely add mbr and or what are the right files that I need to boot first off of the sata drive
then I can remove the c drive saving all info on e drive

it is not wise to mix IDE with SATA. Use one or the other. XP defaults to IDE when configuring. If mixing, use IDE as your primary drive.

last statement reads I want to remove the ide drive from machine
would it be better to remove first then try to fix the system files for the working sata drive
the last few times I had one this bad all I could do was reinstall OS
not sure how to get the sata to boot by itself with just a fix
when finished all that will be running is the sata drive
disk management shows the c=ide as the system drive and E= sata as boot
when I tried to reverse this in bios and in boot.ini boot error came up
the sub must not have been able to load the OS right the first time
there where 3 installs of xp on machine when I removed the 2 bad ones (no boot)
the e drive did not contain the system or boot files
I don't want to hammer this install as the sub will be 18 in 5 months and it will be out of my hands
