After releasing its first title, the very average Remember Me, back in 2013, the pressure was on French developer Dontnod Entertainment to follow it up with a better game. In 2015, it did just that, releasing the multi-award-winning Life is Strange. Next year sees the release of its third game, Vampyr, and you can watch 15 minutes of its pre-alpha gameplay in the video above.
In a plot that couldn’t be further away from teenage girls, time travel, and Oregon, Vampyr is an action role-playing game set in early 20th century London during the Spanish Flu pandemic. The player takes on the role of the recently vampirized Dr. Jonathan Reid, who is struggling with his duties as a doctor and the need to feed on human blood.
This semi-open world does have a strong Bloodborne vibe about it, and Reid has some pretty cool vampire powers. Morality plays a big part in Vampyr; you could always just feed on the ill who are close to death, but you’ll level up faster by chewing down on a healthy victim. You can even complete the game without killing anyone, but don’t expect to level up if you do.
Reid can scan people to find any scumbags who wouldn't be missed if you drained their blood. You can kill anyone, but each person’s death will have consequences that affect the story. Murder too many healthy victims and an area will fall into ruin – much like the game mechanic used in Dishonored.
Dontnod points out that Vampyr is still "very early in the development process." Many elements seen in the video will be improved, particularly the combat, before its release next year.
Vampyr definitely looks like it has potential. Hopefully, it will match one of my favorite titles of all time, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, and we’ll have another great vampire game on the PC.
