I don't like AVG, either.
I think, it's a bad piece of software and really heavy on resources.

If you want to, uninstall it, using AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools and go for one of these:
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

Thanks...I think I just may try one of the other ones. This computer isn't the fastest to begin with, so anything I can do to lighten the load helps.

I'm about ready to can ZoneAlarm on this as well...subscription is up in a few days and the newest version is very annoying. Why on God's green earth does a company create a firewall that continually warns you about it's own processes? (Forcefield, in particular!) And when I've tried to change the program settings so that it won't continually pop warnings for Forcefield, it has no effect whatsoever. Need to get a free firewall that works better.

Oh and BTW...

I was reading a post somewhere up here that talked about removing ZoneAlarm..the poster said they had removed it but found that process files left behind after the uninstall were still running, even though it was supposedly all removed, so I guess that explains why Norton was still running on my desktop as well. The Symantec folder in my Program Files folder went into the recycling bin today, hopefully that's the end of that.

You may try Comodo free firewall, which I use...

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.
