Clicking any icon on desktop sends to Recycle Bin

On clicking any icon on my Windows XP desktop, a dialog box opens saying "Are you sure you want to send (program) to recycle bin?" If I select No, nothing happens - the dialog box stays there. If I say Yes, the icon goes into the Recycle Bin. Can anyone help please? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure but think the problem started after an unsuccessful attempt to install the latest Windows Updates recently.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Try doing a Windows repair, as per this thread HERE.

Once you have finished doing the repair. You will need to update you Windows again, as the repair will wipe all your current updates.
