when you say you have 2 drives
was each installed with OS
can try removing 1 drive to load xp
as fact I suggest to load xp have only 1 drive installed

its coming along

i actually think i am making head way , i went to my friends house brought my drives with me, stuck the master in his computer ran windows recovery , did a fixmbr, now i am doing a bootcfg /rebuild to repair my boot.ini file, i hope this works? any suggestions?

well, your Ubuntu partition was set active after install so it went to grub, all you need to do is flag the windows partition active, by means of a partitioning tool.

when you installed Ubuntu it didnt modify your boot.ini file, it just set its own partition or the partition with grub active. which if your ubuntu install is on the secondary grub was installed on the primary in front of windows and will load first, so setting the NTFS partition active should work.
