Usually, this is a video graphics card problem.
Shut down. Then cold boot to SAFE MODE by pressing the <F8> key once per second as soon as you press the on switch.
Then you will often find that you get a bright screen if it is a bad video graphics port or card. If it is dark still, put the monitor on a friend's computer to see if it is still dark.
If it is, it needs an inverter which costs $50 to $75 in a repair shop, plus labor. You are better off buying a new monitor from Samsung, Sharp, or LG.
