Compaq Evo power systems

I am having a problem with a compaq evo n600c laptop. The computer doesn't seem to "know" that it has switched over to battery power. When i pull the cord out, the computer still works, but the icon on the taskbar doesn't change to a battery icon, and none of the power saving options kick in.

The OS is freshly installed, and all of the windows XP, and Compaq updates have been installed. (Except WinXP Service Pack 2, whch Compaq/HP recommends i don't do).

I got the laptop used from ebay, and the battery is supposedly new, but i doubt that, if i could find another evo 60 battery to borrow i could switch them and do some testing.

If anyone has any other ideas, i'd appreciate it.

Thanks
-kevin
