Computer Boots to nothing

My friend has a IBM laptop computer with a major problem. it doesn't Boot. When ever it powered up a white screen with the word Error appears. does anyone know what the problem might be. i think he just needs a new computer, maybe not.

1. read the NO POST guide in the guides forum
2. Ensure your BIOS is ok
3. Ensure your HD is not corrupted and the boot sector is ok
4. Read the rules for newcomers regarding posting messages. In the future you need to be more specific with issues in order to get help.

Ask "your friend' if he made any changes to this laptop just prior to this event. Basically someone who knows laptops has to do a major diagnostic (see above). If it's old and almost "done" anyway...new units for basic business purposes can be very reasonable. HP makes decent units.
