Computer shuts down after post

hi strange predicament for my non gaming pc...its only internet and other office type apps use
this morning my son was on it and it was totally frozen, hes 5, he still learning the ropes, so i had to reset it, to boot again

well now it wont stay along long enough to even post or enter the bios, it tends to shut itself down at random moments between starting up and before windows loads..

i tried to apply a new coat of thermal compound, switch out the power supplies, but that did nothing, it still wont stay on past where it detects the harddrives and irq and bios, somewhere before the windows loading screen, it just turns off

its a 2.4ghz p4
512mb ram
ati 9550 256
160gb seagate harddrive
msi mobo
500w ultra PS

never seen this problem, any ideas??

Assuming that it's XP make sure the bios is set to boot off of the cd, put the XP cd in and go into the recovery console. Once there run a chkdsk /r and see if that takes care of the issue. If not, next run fixmbr then try to start the computer normally.
