While launching defrag in XP the system shuts down and restarts. Defrag never launches though. What could be causing this? Is this a sign of hard drive failure? Any advice will be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First of all run a disk check and tick the box to fix errors.

Secondly right click my computer select properties and then the advanced tab.

Click on settings under startup and recovery and untick the box which says automatically restart,

Also set the write debugging information to none.

Now when your system crashes you should receive an error message which will tell you what caused the the problem.

If this doesn`t work then post back with the results of any error messages.
